The Arabian Sand Boa (Eryx jayakari) is one of the strangest-looking snakes in the hobby, with eyes set high on the head and a body shaped for life under loose substrate. Its face has an odd, almost cartoonish quality, but the design is all function. As a pet, it is a specialist burrower for keepers who like unusual animals more than constant visibility. It is not a typical handling snake and should be approached as a display of natural behavior. The appeal is pure oddity: a sand-swimming boa that looks like evolution made a very specific bet.

Care Guide

Housing, feeding, and handling guidance collected in one place.

Housing

  • Give Arabian Sand Boa a deep, diggable substrate zone and snug hides so it can choose between being buried, partly covered, or fully concealed.

Lighting & Heat

  • Use a sourced species-specific thermal gradient rather than a generic snake setup. Track humidity with a digital hygrometer and adjust only from sourced guidance. If UVB is used, match the stored Ferguson Zone 1 / UVI 0.0-0.7 target at the basking position.

Feeding

Prey size should be 1.0-1.25x widest body part.

  • Feed Arabian Sand Boa thawed prey only when it is alert and settled; many burrowing snakes strike best from cover rather than in the open.

Handling & Health

  • Handle Arabian Sand Boa close to a surface and keep sessions short; these snakes often prefer cover and may stress if kept exposed too long.
